I come to you with my face half-numb after a trip to the dentist, where I’ve just had my last silver filling replaced. This must be some kind of milestone? After a childhood and young adulthood rife with cavities, I have now reached the point in adulthood when the fillings of my youth have all worn out and been replaced, one by one, with whatever that white stuff is. I have also reached the point in adulthood when the dentist’s chair is no longer a site of dread but just a really nice place to lie down with a drill in my mouth.
I can’t say that I remember, though, after the dental procedures of yore, being this numb and foggy for hours afterward. Making sentences this morning feels like trying to climb out of one of those foam pits at the indoor trampoline park, a simile for which I just remembered I have actual video footage !!! from a family outing in 2019:
