Oh man, your mere mention of the B&N on N. May reminded me of own trips there with my father. Every couple of months on a Tuesday we would have "culture night" where we would go wine shopping at this large liquor warehouse on NW Expressway near a golf course (Tuesday was ladies night) and then head to that B&N to shop for handfuls of books to hold us over until the next trip.
The last trip I took before the pandemic was to NYC to see friends for Thanksgiving. I got tickets to see Byrne's American Utopia show and it was so wonderful. Last night I went and saw Bjork, my first big concert since, and maybe things are looking a little brighter.
Since 1976 I have been a follower/fan of Peter Frampton. I could relate so much to what you said. I have been to many concerts in many cities and states, have met many other fans and made lifelong friendships. I've met Peter many times; he even proposed to me (for my husband) during a concert in Las Vegas in 2002. I have posters on my wall. I have recently began sharing much of my collection with other, younger fans and am in the process of creating a scrapbook for the 50 plus concerts I have attended. I am 70 years old, but when I am attending a Peter Frampton concert or in his presence, I am my 25 year old self again when I saw him for the first time. These feelings aren't easily explained unless you are with another person who "gets it". Thank you for sharing your story. I completely get it.
Oh my god, Deborah, you had a public proposal via Peter Frampton at a concert in Las Vegas!!!! That's the stuff of legend. I love that it happened to you.
Reading "Driving my car the other day, with Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On) playing on the stereo", I'm suddenly transported back.
A memory I didn't even know I had forgotten.
I'm19 years old, invincible of course, and sitting on the windowsill of a small car, torso outside, legs inside, arms waving into the night air, while a friend I've now long forgotten speeds through the dusty outback Australian evening, the opening strains of Remain in Light pumping on the car stereo. Great times. :)
I grew up in OKC (now living in Washington too) and know that Barnes & Noble well. I suspect we might have shared a pair of those ratty communal headphones.
This spoke directly to me! I also have a musician I admire and fangirl over (in my mid 30s lol) and this piece resonated so much to me...like the fact that it's sometimes puzzling...and how I've contemplated what would happen if I found one one day that he's died. So nice to hear a story of someone out there who is like me, and written so beautifully and eloquently of course!
Haha yeah it's the lead singer of Bastille...when I met him a few years ago I gave him my tattered copy of Ignorance by Kundera..my sisters are still making fun of me for this 🙈
I saw the Talking Heads (with Black Uhuru) at the Santa Barbara Bowl in 1982. I was backstage and got to say Hi to David. It was a pretty amazing experience for a kid who wasn't old enough to drive!
I love that you are back…I’ve missed you! Was an avid fan of Orangette and loved all your books! Sometimes I re-read Delancey and remember how delish the pizza was when we visited Seattle! Huge fan of David Byrne and love your story!

American Utopia is incredible, isn't it? And YESSSSS to Bjork!

Ross, that's the kind of scene I imagine showing up in a movie about being a teen in 1980. Iconic.

Made my heart swell - from one weirdo to another.

Mayumi, would you be willing to share who the musician is? Now I'm dying to know...

!!!! Incredible. What was he like when you met him?
So very glad you are "back", altho I'm sure you have been somewhere, doing something, all along. Take care.
Thank you. xx

Thank you, Sueanne!
Perfection. I love Byrne and the Talking Heads, and I love your homage to his art. Thanks, Molly. Here’s to making art anyway.
Cheers to you, friend.
“Here was a spaceship I wanted to ride.” Beautiful writing. A wonderful way to start my Tuesday.
This was so good that I’m sitting here in tears, M. So, so good. 💙
You made my week, friend.
